Cotton gingham is a great easy fabric for embroidery. Dead easy for cross stitch too. These are some examples I own from what has become a bit of a pink collection. 
The stitches are very simple and these would have been quite quick to complete too. You just need an even weave and you're off and rolling.

I think I used to have a dress with similar stitching as a girl, it looked lovely with the soft pastel colours. Makes me want to bake cupcakes!
